Colin Cowherd: “Mike Sando of The Athletic does this every year. He interviews 50 NFL coaches and they rate 35 quarterbacks – starters and top backups and put them in tiers. Tier 1 is Mahomes, Russell Wilson, Rodgers, Brees, and Deshaun Watson. Tier 2 is Brady, Lamar Jackson, Big Ben, Stafford, Matt Ryan, Wentz, Dak, and Philip Rivers. I’d put Dak in 3, and Philip Rivers I’d absolutely put in Tier 3. Jimmy Garoppolo is in Tier 3 along with Ryan Tannehill, Nick Foles, Daniel Jones, Sam Darnold, Baker Mayfield, Kirk Cousins, and Kyler Murray. I’m going to give you stats for Jimmy Garoppolo – A. the first year he started, B. in the toughest division in football, and C. coming off an ACL injury. Wins – tied for first. Completion percentage – tied for fourth. Passing touchdowns – tied for fifth. Fourth quarter comebacks – tied for first. Game-winning drives – tied for fourth. Passer rating – tied for eighth… Why do people not get Jimmy Garoppolo?? My guess is two things. The Niners defense gets the headlines, and with Garoppolo there are no characteristics to grab onto. He’s not as big and strong as Cam or Big Ben, he doesn’t have Mahomes’ arm, Aaron Rodgers’ release, or the escability of Lamar, Russell Wilson, or Carson Wentz… Garoppolo outplayed Patrick Mahomes in the first three quarters of the Super Bowl. He may not be a tier 1, but he’s mid to upper tier 2, and there’s no way he’s middle of tier 3.” (Full Video Above)
Colin had a problem with Sando ranking San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo in the middle of tier 3 with QBs the likes of Ryan Tannehill, Nick Foles, Daniel Jones, Sam Darnold, Baker Mayfield, Kirk Cousins, and Kyler Murray.
Check out the video above as Colin argues why Garoppolo should be ranked at the top of tier 2 (Brady, L. Jackson, Big Ben, Stafford, M. Ryan, Wentz) and why he’s flying under the radar as one of the most underappreciated players in the league.
